Light Series 4: Light Installations | Incandescent Commercial

A. Purpose of Space : The space is a gathering center where there will be lots of entrancing and exiting. The space is multileveled and can also be viewed from the outside because of the wall windows.
B. Purpose of Lighting: The Lighting in this space is so warm and welcoming it is very fitting for the space because it draws the user in and is also used as a way-finding device, along the walkways.
C. Luminaire: The only Luminaire I can see in this image are the ones in the ceiling. they are very tiny like holes poked in the ceiling. There are also some on either side of the columns that are visible as well. These look too much like exterior flood lights and in my opinion take away from the softness of this wonderful space. The other lamps are hidden and only the luminance can be seen, which is very successful here.
D.) Effect of Lighting: The main effect of lighting here is a mysterious glow. This is strengthened by the fact that you really dont see the lamps only the effect of the lamp. The down lighting from the second level creates a play with light on the bottom level with a rhythm of large bright spots of light on the floor.
E. Effect of Lighting:The color scheme is this space in monochromatic with a touch of warmth because of the gold of the hues. The Incandescent lamp gives off warmer light so it adds to the warm feeling of the colors.
F. Illumination Appropriateness: I think the illumination is very successful because of the play with light and shadow in the space. The contrast keeps you very intrigued and makes the space almost sparkle.
G. The major element I would change in this space would be the fact that the double headed lights on either side of the columns do not mesh well with the wonderful feel of this space. They should be replaced with cove lighting so that the lamp is hidden and then perhaps add up lighting to the lower level interior columns so that more lighting is available where it is needed most.
